Installed at Park Avenue Armory as a result of Barba’s two-week residency, In a Perpetual Now of Instantaneous Visibility was conceived as a piece where “light and sound are equal partners defining new space.” Barba uses time as a ‘perspectival tool’ allowing the audience to understand how environment is sculpted out of the light rays emitted from analogue projectors. By synching the shutter movement of the projectors with the percussions of drums and a cello, Barba orchestrates her version of a cinematic machine that pumps light into the historical Veterans Room of the Armory. Rather than simply receiving an image, the viewers enhance their understanding of the cinematic apparatus.
